New rules have been made.

Covid has certainly brought with it a lot of rules to consider before travelling and now there’s one more to add to the list. A select number of airlines have banned a certain type of face mask on board their flights.

Although new rules regarding face masks came into play in July, many people are still wearing them as an extra measure of safety and on some forms of public transport, they are still mandatory unless you’re medically exempt. But now, you have to think about what kind of face mask you pack to wear whilst flying.

Finnair announced this month that it will no longer allow passengers to wear fabric face masks such as the ones many high street brands are selling. Instead, people must wear surgical masks or similar.

The company said in a Tweet: “We will no longer accept fabric masks on our flights. We accept surgical masks, FFP2 or FFP3 respirator masks without a valve or other valve free masks with the same standard (N95). Please remember you need to wear a mask throughout the entire journey.”

Starting 16 August, we will no longer accept fabric masks on our flights. “The safety of our customers and employees is our first priority. Fabric face masks are slightly less efficient at protecting people from infection than surgical masks,” they added in a statement.

Finnair is one of an increasing number of airlines who now take this stance. Previously both Lufthansa and Air France said “it is mandatory to wear a surgical mask or an FFP1, FFP2, or FFP3 type mask, without an exhaust valve, onboard.” This comes as more people agree that although a fabric mask is better than none, surgical level masks or the equivalent do offer superior protection overall.

With rules often changing, it’s always best to check your airline’s Covid policies before flying.
